ROBERT E. KYTE President
Pacific Press has just completed 125 years
of publishing the good news of Jesus’ love. During these years of service,
millions of pieces of literature in numerous languages have reached out to
touch the lives of people around the world. Today the message and mission
of Pacific Press remains unchanged from its message and mission when it began
operation more than 125 years ago—to provide resources for the church’s nurture
and outreach.
Operating from its efficient plant
in Nampa, Idaho, Pacific Press has an annual income for the publishing house
activities exceeding $20 million annually. In addition, through its management
of Adventist Book Centers and literature evangelism programs for numerous
conferences, the publishing house’s corporate revenues now exceed $32 million.
Pacific Press is debt-free and has consistently produced a modest operating
profit each year for more than a decade.
Pacific Press’s financial stability
has allowed it to continue to keep up with printing technology, including
the recent acquisition of computer-to-plate prepress processes. While technology
has allowed for a decreased work force in recent years, the employees of Pacific
Press are highly trained in new technologies.
The huge volume of products, which
makes Pacific Press the state of Idaho’s single largest mailer and one of
its heaviest shippers, continues to make a profound impact on human lives.
Church Periodicals
Signs of the Times remains
the flagship periodical published at Pacific Press. Editor Marvin Moore is
an experienced Adventist pastor, editor, and journalist well known to most
Adventists through the many books he has written. He is committed to continuing
to make Signs a powerful soul-winning force for the church.
Pacific Press is also home to the primary
Spanish sharing journal for the church in North America, El Centinela,
and its French counterpart, La Sentinelle, both ably edited by Miguel
Valdivia.
Other vital periodicals produced at
the press include the children’s magazines edited by Aileen Andres Sox—Our
Little Friend and Primary Treasure—both of which minister each
Sabbath to tens of thousands of boys and girls around the world.
Among the most widely used products
printed at the press is the quarterly Adult Sabbath School Bible Study
Guide in four editions—standard, teacher’s, large-print, and Easy Reading—in
both English and Spanish. The quarterly release of Ellen White Notes is published
as an adjunct study guide to the Adult Bible Study Guide. The Collegiate
Quarterly is also printed at the publishing house. In addition, Pacific
Press produces or distributes a quarterly Bible Study Guide for many
other language groups.
Book Publishing
In addition to its magazines, Pacific
Press is a major publisher of books and educational materials for the church
and is also home to Chapel Music, which features a variety of Christian music
by Adventist artists.
Vital also in the product line at
Pacific Press are the textbooks and other educational materials published
for elementary, secondary, and college-level schools across North America
and throughout the world.
Book Distribution
Pacific Press has continued to invest
in the future of publishing in North America and around the world. Over the
past several years Pacific Press has taken on the management of Adventist
Book Centers in 13 conferences with 18 retail outlets. While the face of literature
evangelism is changing in North America, Pacific Press continues to serve
traditional programs while operating an independent distributor program for
a large number of conferences in the southwestern, midwestern, and western
United States, as well as Canada. Under these programs, literature evangelists
carry on the traditional role of providing literature to the general public,
but do so under the freedom of being independent distributors.
Pacific Press has also entered into
the Internet world and e-commerce. With a corporate Web site at www.pacificpress.com,
its products are readily available on the World Wide Web at www.adventistbookcenter.com.
Pacific Press began more than 125
years ago as a result of a commitment to the Adventist mission and the need
to provide materials for the church’s outreach and nurture. That continues
to be its mission today. Pacific Press is committed to being a viable publishing
house that shares the Seventh-day Adventist message of God’s love and His
truth with the church and the world.
